About the Author
Cheryl McKinnon
I live in southern Ontario, Canada with my husband Scott, two daughters and my dogs in a country house surrounded by nature, and filled with vintage inspiration.
I love bright colour palettes and bold graphic elements, and often use retro themes in my designs. Some of my influences come from retro modern design, vintage kitsch, and mid-century fashion and design. I think my best designs happen when I am being true to myself. They reflect my personality and point of view: I love bright colours and modern design - and I always try to find the fun and positive side of things in life. So this comes out in my designs.
I’ve been stitching since I was very young. My mum and grandmother stitched traditional needlepoint, petit point and cross stitch, and it was their work that influenced me to first take up cross stitching as a hobby.
My mother was an inspiration to me (and still is!). She taught me how to cross stitch and sew at a very young age, and I think it started me on the path to becoming a designer. I started as an artist, after completing a degree in Fine Arts in Ottawa, Canada, and then moving to Vancouver, Canada to study Fashion Design. I worked briefly in the fashion industry as a technical pattern designer in Vancouver and Seattle. After my first daughter was born in 2007, I started my own small business on Etsy, designing and selling my own cross stitch patterns.
Now, you can find my work in numerous books, magazines and publications. Visit tinymodernist.com, where you can find my latest designs in PDF form, or you can purchase my charts from many Needle Shops and online retailers worldwide.
I love designing cross stitch, and am so grateful that I get to do what I love.
